Wire basket – A common complaint gardeners have about hanging baskets is no matter how attractive the plants in them are, the baskets themselves are usually a bit ugly. A hanging wire basket can solve this problem and offer some other advantages. Hanging wire baskets allow you to plant plants not only on top of the basket, but on the sides as well. They also provide plants with excellent drainage.
Buy an empty hanging wire basket at a garden center. Empty baskets usually cost only a few dollars and come in a variety of colors and styles. While in the garden center, pick up some coconut fiber. You can find coconut fiber, either in sheets that you will need to cut or in pre-cut sheets that fit the size of your portfolio. Place the coconut fiber in the hanging basket. Line the basket all the way around and from top to bottom with a single layer of coconut fiber. The coconut fiber keeps in the soil, but also allows moisture to seep out.
Fill the bottom of the basket with the potting mix. This is coconut fiber instead. Make cuts in the coconut fiber in which you want to insert the plants. Be creative and organize the plants on the whole side of the boat however you want. Consider placing leaking plants in the bottom of the pot, plants on the sides and vertical plants hanging on top of the basket.
