You need to consider several different angles before you decide to build a decks and patios. Often, the crucial factor is the area you want to build on. Porches are typically elevated and suitable for spaces requiring raised platforms sometimes by an upper story of a home or area that falls off. Porches are more suitable for areas that contain large trees, since they can be built around a tree without dangerous excavation, which may damage the forest on the root system.

Not that deck plans cannot be built at ground level. But terraces are better suited to areas that require less grading.
